How do Christians know which parts of the bible are literal and which aren’t?

Some of them claim that the more ridiculous stories in the bible are metaphors or allegories. How do they know which ones are literal and which ones aren’t and isn’t this a form of cherry picking? Did god provide a companion book to go along with the bible explaining these things?
