How does someone believe only parts of the bible are true?

Anyone up for trying to help me understand how this can make plausible sense? I have wondered how people rationalize that some of the bible is factual and other parts not. aka use the bible as a reference for truth when some of it has a hard time measuring up to today’s scientific standards.
